Nine students from the Virginia Tech Turf Club traveled to San Diego in February to attend the 2025 Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Conference and compete in the Collegiate Turf Bowl. The event brought together turfgrass students from across the U.S. and Canada for a week of learning, networking, and competition.
Of the nine students who attended, four were Agricultural Technology (AT) students at the time, and one was an AT alum, now pursuing a four-year degree in Agribusiness.
The Turf Bowl is a rigorous team-based exam that tests students on turfgrass management topics including weed and disease identification, fertilizer and irrigation calculations, and case study problem-solving—skills essential for future golf course superintendents. Virginia Tech fielded three teams of three students each.
While in San Diego, students explored the trade show floor, learning about cutting-edge technologies and equipment. One highlight was connecting with Virginia Tech turf alum Matt Pound, now with Toro, who shared insights into industry innovations.
Beyond the competition, students attended professional development sessions and networking events, gaining exposure to industry leaders and potential employers. The experience also provided valuable opportunities for team building, travel, and applying classroom knowledge in real-world settings.
VT alum Matt Pound who works for Toro spoke with students and instructors at the trade show.

“It’s always rewarding to see our students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world challenges,” said Jon Dickerson, faculty sponsor and instructor. “The Turf Bowl and GCSAA Conference give them a chance to grow professionally, build connections, and represent Virginia Tech on a national stage.”
Dickerson also expressed appreciation for the support that made the trip possible:
“We’re incredibly grateful to the industry professionals and organizations who helped fund this experience. Their generosity ensures our students have access to opportunities that shape their careers and expand their horizons.”
Faculty sponsors Jon Dickerson and Dr. Sandor accompanied the students, continuing their support of the Turf Club’s mission to prepare students for leadership in the turfgrass industry.
We’re grateful to the supporters who helped make this experience possible.
Funding for the trip came from generous contributions, including support from the Virginia Sports Field Managament Association and proceeds from the Turf Club’s apparel sale. Thank you to everyone who continues to invest in our students!
