Agricultural Technology Program Honors Industry Partners with 2025 Friend of the Program Awards

The Agricultural Technology Program at Virginia Tech recently recognized two outstanding industry partners with its 2025 Friend of the Program Award, celebrating their continued commitment to student learning and program development.

Virginia Forage and Grassland Council (VFGC) was honored for its long-standing support of the program, particularly through its engagement with students in the Forages and Forage Animal Systems classes. Each winter, students attend the VFGC annual meeting, where they connect with leading graziers, forage researchers, and industry professionals. In the spring, students visit member farms to learn firsthand about intensive rotational grazing and progressive forage management practices.

This year, the award was presented to Keith Tuck, current VFGC President and a proud alumnus of the Agricultural Technology Class of 1993. Tuck’s leadership and continued involvement exemplify the council’s commitment to advancing forage education and supporting future agricultural professionals.

“The Virginia Forage and Grassland Council has been a longtime supporter of the Agricultural Technology Program,” said Advanced Instructor Wesley Gwaltney. “Whether it’s supporting our students so they can attend the VFGC winter meetings or traveling to Blacksburg to share their knowledge in our one-day, student grazing school, VFGC is always excited to share their mission of promoting the benefits of forage-based systems.”

The program also recognized Landscape Supply & W.S. Connelley Co. Inc. for their exceptional support over the past several years. Representatives Jared Russell and Eric Spurlock have made multiple visits to campus, sharing real-world insights and personal experiences that enrich classroom learning. Their generous donations of supplies have enabled students to renovate lawns across the community, providing hands-on experience in turf and landscape management.

“Landscape Supply has gone above and beyond to support our students,” said Instructor Jon Dickerson, who nominated the company for the award. “From hosting field trips to donating supplies and sharing industry knowledge, their team has helped shape the next generation of turf and landscape professionals. Their impact is felt not just in our classrooms, but across the community.”

Now in its second year, the Friend of the Program Award honors individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the Agricultural Technology Program and its students. Award recipients are selected based on their involvement in activities such as hosting field trips, guest teaching, offering internships, providing scholarships, sponsoring events, donating supplies, and promoting the program to industry groups and prospective students.

“These awards recognize the incredible investment our partners make in our students and the future of the program,” said instructor Rose Jeter. “We are grateful for their continued support and proud to honor them as true friends of Agricultural Technology.”
